Hosta Sum & Substance forms an impressive mound of approximately 270cm in height, with a spread reaching up to 150cm at maturity. It features thick, broadly heart-shaped leaves that are light green, measuring up to 50cm in length, and changing to chartreuse or gold depending on sun exposure. The leaves are shiny on the upper side and thinly glaucous below, adding colour and texture to the landscape. In summer, dense racemes of bell-shaped, fragrant, pale lavender flowers bloom on scapes measuring 100cm long. This variety is reputed to be highly resistant to slugs, due to its waxy leaves. To achieve optimal leaf colouration, it should be planted in sunlight. Hosta Sum & Substance is certainly a striking addition to any garden, having been recognized as the American Hosta Growers Association Hosta of the Year (2004),  and has received recognition from the American Hosta Society with the Distinguished Merit Hosta award 2015, has received recognition from the American Hosta Society with the Distinguished Merit Hosta award 2015. and awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
