Hosta Liberty forms an upright vase shape reaching 60-65cm in height, with a spread up to 100cm at maturity. It is a variant of Hosta Sagae. In spring, its thick, wide-oval leaves, measuring 30cm in length and 25cm in width, with mucronate tips and heart-shaped bases, emerge. The new leaves are blue green with wide yellow margins. As the leaves mature, the centres turn greener, and the margins lighten to creamy white. Hosta Liberty is distinguished from Hosta Sagae by its significantly larger leaf margins. In early summer, funnel-shaped pale lavender flowers bloom on scapes rising above the foliage mound, reaching as tall as 100cm. While Hosta Liberty is reported to be slug-resistant, it may succumb under pressure but remains sun-tolerant. This plant was awarded the American Hosta Growers Association Hosta of the Year in 2012 and received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
