Hosta Fire Island forms a small mound reaching 25cm-35cm in height with a spread of up to 75cm at maturity. It is highly valued for its brilliant foliage and striking stems. This variety is an excellent addition to any shaded area in the garden, forming an appealing, dense mound of broad, heart-shaped leaves that start as a glowing pale yellow and mature into chartreuse. The leaves are shiny on top and matte underneath, providing a beautiful contrast with the bright red stems, which retain their bold colour throughout the growing season. By June and July, tall scapes up to 50cm produce funnel-shaped lavender flowers. While Hosta Fire Island can present some challenges in cultivation, it proves to be well worth the effort. It performs best when planted in a pot or a sheltered bed with dappled sunlight and good drainage during its younger stages. This outstanding variety is ideal for container planting or mass planting, and it has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
