Hosta sieboldiana Elegans will form a large mound approximately 65cm-75cm in height, with a spread of up to 127cm, at maturity. It has heart-shaped, puckered, thick, blue-grey leaves over a foot long. Hosta Elegans is recognized for its blue leaf colour, forming a dense mound that can crowd out most weeds. The foliage is topped in summer with racemes of very pale lilac tinged white, bell-shaped flowers rising on scapes of 80cm tall. This large Hosta has good slug resistance and some sun tolerance. Hosta sieboldiana var. elegans is among the older varieties and is the original plant behind popular varieties such as Hosta Frances Williams and Hosta Colour Glory. It is a strong but slow-growing plant often included in collections. It has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
